I have a series of projects stemming from the theme of salt. Salt interests me because it's a minimal element that sustains the world. It's the only food that was never alive—the only edible stone—and it's what underpins all of gastronomy.
To Preserve My Ideas in Salt is a sculptural series where I cultivate salt on drawing paper or poetry paper. One of the age-old uses of salt has been the preservation of food and organic matter. Based on this premise, I'm looking for a way to preserve poems that have influenced me or drawing paper with small notes of ideas I've had, so I can safeguard them. By preserving in salt, the paper becomes hard and solid, but at the same time, the written words disappear or become illegible. This makes me reflect on how preserving to "preserve through time" is also a form of forgetting and entails a kind of wear and tear.
