Artist and curator. Ana Sofia Esteva (Mexico City, 2000) studied Visual Arts at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving “La Esmeralda”. Her work focuses on the subtleties of that which goes unnoticed. Through a multidisciplinary practice, she incorporates elements of conceptual art to explore language, places, fiction, poetry, and everyday life, and takes these elements to the point where the almost-nothing is revealed. Her artistic work is shaped by her curatorial projects and vice versa. She maintains both practices simultaneously yet separately.
She had her first solo exhibition at the Galería Banda Municipal, titled "Como la sal en la comida" (Like Salt in Food), in November 2024. Shortly after, she presented another solo exhibition, "Lo no visible está en alguna parte" (The Unseen Is Somewhere), at the Red de Arte Mexicano (RAM) in November 2024, and another titled "Vahos" (Breaths) at the Universidad Iberoamericana in March 2025. She has participated in group exhibitions at Palma Gallery (Mexico), Servidor Local (Mexico), Minor Attractions (London), ZhdK (Switzerland), the Torre de los Vientos (Mexico), Espacio Alternativo de la ENPEG (Mexico), and the Serendipity Arts Festival (India), amongst many others. She has also curated exhibitions in Mexico at La Biblioteca de México, Red de Arte Mexicano, Laguna, Espacio Alternativo de la ENPEG, Cabecera Municipal, and Taller Casa Pili. She has attended an international residency at Virreina Piso Térmico (Colombia).
[artist statement]
I´m searching for near-nothingness¹. I want to find the imperceptible parts of reality and stare patiently at them. Working with drawing, video, installation, and objects, I observe subtlety in that which lies unseen yet exists. I unveil language, literature, places, stones, and fiction; always with the intention to find where they can become almost-nothing and name their significance from this silent part of reality. I pursue a notion of the minuscule sublime, a feeling that does not overwhelm, but rather affects with gentle lightness.

¹ Near-nothingness is that which is or may be on the verge or being unapparent, that which ultimately makes up what is visible. That which remains unobserved sustains reality: dust, breath, shadows; from a simple footnote to the subtle flavor of salt in food. Near-nothingness is as a philosophy that is about to dissipate, an attempt to caress nonexistence.
